i thought the japanese -made trucks held their value way better than the american-made ones. so, why when you go about 2 yrs old or older, does it’s price dip down into the 11-13k range….depending on model, but im talking about a medium-equipped package. similar trucks like ford, chevy or dodge, are still priced in the high teens.

Because they are terrible trucks. Never buy a Jap SUV or truck. They also get 4 mpg less than a GM truck. Thats why
Because they are usually cheaper to purchase new than the American trucks.
They also get less fuel mileage, the interior is horriable (in my opinion).
Resale value is based on a lot of things. Popularity is one of them. Reliability is another one.
Americans like to drive American trucks. They are sturdier, more comfortable, more reliable, and it’s the one vehicle where America really can outdo the Japanese. The Japanese haven’t quite figured out trucks yet (which is why the NEW Tundra looks like the OLD 99 Chevy on the inside).
If a vehicle is not as “popular” then it’s value is lower. Because fewer people want them. That’s why a Kia (which is a very reliable vehicle) can sell for $15,000 – the same as a Honda, Toyota, Pontiac or Nissan – but in 4 years it’s worth a whole lot less in trade-in than those other vehicles. And it’s also why the Honda’s trade-in value is so much higher than Nissan’s, Pontiacs, Hyundai’s, Mazda’s, etc. They are POPULAR.
I live in Phoenix and that’s the one place in the US where Chevy/GMC trucks outsell Ford trucks. Because of this our trade-in values are higher on them. People will pay more for the vehicles because they think they are better. In your case they are. The Titan’s not so great a truck compared to the American ones. Sorry.
Next time you want to buy a vehicle look up the same model on Edmunds.com or KBB.com (kelly blue book) – only 3 or 4 years older.
Car prices don’t go up that much each year so if a NEW truck today sells for $25,000 – it probably sold for $23,000 3 years ago. If the used ones are selling high then it’s a good bet that the new one will resale high in 3 years too.
Foreign CARS usually have good resale and residual values. Their full size trucks are inferior to the American models in temrs of quality, because they don’t yet know how to build a tough, dependable truck. Look at the Honda Ridgeline for example. It isn;t really even a truck.
Another reason is that the Titan is about to be scrapped. Dodge will build all of Nissan full sized trucks from 2010 on. As part of the agreement, Nissan will build Dodge a car.
Discontinuation of a model hurts the resale.
Unfortunately Nissan bombed big time with the Titan. They were in a rush to compete with the Toyota Tundra and put a truck on the market that had many issues. The motor in the Titan is notorious for going out with only around 70,000 miles. Reputation drives resale – and if consumers know that a used Nissan Titan with 45,000 miles may need a new motor within 2 years, they most likely would buy a different make of truck.
Because they are junk, people need to stop thinking that because its Japanese its better. That is not the case. The American trucks are far superior to any foreign truck out there.
