I think that it is a F-250, 1994, 7.3 Powerstroke. I want it from a friend (I won’t pay for it, since the trans is shot) and I was wondering how hard it would be to install it. My cousins are very good with cars and their inner workings and they can help me.
alright its not a 94, i found out it is a 88. please answer accordingly!

your best bet is to rebuild the one in the truck because you already know its the right one and rebuilding it correctly is the key. If that is the five speed automatic that is a good transmission and stronger than the 6 speed auto. My friend paid 4 grand for his rebuild and never had any issues after that take care of the truck and it will take care of you too.
It’s going to have the E4OD most likely, expect a rebuild to run around $2000-$2500 or so. About half that for a junkyard transmission. Keep in mind the version of the E4OD used in the diesel and big block F-250/350 is different than the E4OD used behind the I6 and small blocks, so an E4OD from a F-150/Bronco won’t work. The unit used in the F-250/350 have heavy duty internals.
Rebuilding an electronically controlled automatic is beyond the scope of most shadetree mechanics, even if they are are well versed in automotive mechanics. It’s pretty specialized work
I would advise against having it rebuilt. Sure it will work but you would be doing it again say in a 2 years. They ONLY replace the worn parts. This transmission needs a complete overhaul not just what bad.
You best option is to buy a Ford Reman HD transmission from FORD! Your looking at 3200-4000 NOT installed. Also, ford requires that an inline transmission filter be installed in the return line
Its also advised that the transmission cooler be replaced and upgraded.
As far as replacing it, you have to get the truck high enough in the air for clearance to get the trans out. Its doable and is not that hard. I would suggest for the trans and pricing to look up tousley ford online. They have pretty good prices. However, the trans prices on that site that say 2000k are not for the diesel engine even know they say they are. Ford Reman HD is the way to go.
Or roll the dice and take it to a local rebuilder Some have had good luck with local rebuild while other a higher % have had bad results. IE 2200 for a rebuild that lasts 2-3 years then they learned there lesson and go with a ford reman HD or if they have the coin a BTS transmission for 5400!
